Biography

Gloria Nilsson is a professional teaching artist. Much of her work has evolved through personal experimentation. Gloria’s degree in Graphic Design from Pratt Institute, has been the backbone for this self-exploration into several fine art mediums. Gloria sees no boundaries and totally embraces the regenerative qualities new art forms provide. Each building upon one another, offering a unique outlook and keeping her work fresh.

Gloria is currently painting on silk. Her expressive process includes using the SERTI (French for “fence” or “enclosing “) method, the traditional French approach to controlling the flow of water-based dye on silk. Gloria further elaborates form, shape, depth and movement by exercising the unconventional freehand use of pigmented gutta (resist). Recently she has also been exploring gelatin printing, creating exciting monotype affects which she applies to papier-mâché sculptures, note cards & prints.

Gloria also designs limited edition jewelry collections interpreting specific topics, bringing awareness to themes such as beauty, hope and healing. Her hand-sculpted pieces are merged with semi-precious stones, crystals and other mixed media and metals. Passed collections describing these themes are “Holding on to Summer”, “How Sweet It Is”, “Love Notes”, “Behold the Angels”, “All Things New Again”, “Bella Casa”, & “Bee Cause”.

Gloria’s work has been exhibited in numerous juried shows, galleries, public venues and outdoor exhibitions. She has been honored with several awards including Honorable mention Illustrators Portfolio; Tassy Walden Awards New Voices in Children’s Literature 2003, Madison Art Society Annual Juried Show Award 2008-2011, Frank’s Package Store Award; Guilford Art League Annual Juried Exhibition 2012, Honorable Mention; Manhattan Arts International Healing Power of Art “Positive Art That Lifts The Spirit” 2012, Artmajeur Silver Award; Artmajeur International 2008-2012, Shoreline Patrons’ Prize; Clinton Art Society 65h Annual Juried Summer Exhibition 2014, Essex Art Association award; Earth, Wind & Fire Exhibition 2014.
