Biography
Maura Kallaway has been crafting unique soap from goat’s milk for over 9 years and continuously develops new recipes and combinations. Maura credits her sister for teaching her the art of soap creation, and thus named her business, Sisters Wicked Good Soap. Sisters Wicked Good Soap makes a fragrance/pigment-free bar as well a variety of fragrances derived from essential and fragrance oils that include seasonal scents and year round favorites from airy florals to earthy musks. Maura loves blending and swirling natural pigments and botanical into her soaps.
Maura’s passion for handmade goat’s milk soap grew as she learned more about all of its natural benefits. As Maura explains, she creates her soap by combining oils or fat with an alkali, which during the saponification process turns it into soap and glycerin. Glycerin is a natural byproduct of this process and is extremely moisturizing which is why some commercial soap companies remove the glycerin and use it to make moisturizers, while other commercial soaps can contain harsh chemicals or alcohol that can irritate or dry the skin. Maura says, “Handmade soap is awesome because it has no harsh chemicals and the glycerin remains in the soap, providing deep moisturizing benefits.”
Maura uses goat’s milk in her soaps because it contains alpha-hydroxy acids such as lactic acid which help skin cells. Goat’s milk also contains vitamins A, C, E and some B vitamins, along with amino acids, citric acid, enzymes, unsaturated fatty acids and zinc ~ all of which nourish skin. Additionally, goat’s milk contains caprylic acid, making goat’s milk soap an alkaline product with a low pH, close to that of human skin. This allows better delivery of moisture and nutrients from the soap to your skin and prevents dryness.
