Biography

Stephanie began her textile study in the early 1970′s when she majored in ethnic textiles at Friends World College. Weaving serapes on back strap looms in Oaxaca, Mexico, was followed by hand-spinning and floor loom training in Denmark and Norway, and culminated with weaving knotted pile rugs with Tibetan refugees in India. She has continued to learn new techniques through many workshops here in the USA.

Stephanie collaborates with Patricia Fortinsky to weave natural-dyed Connecticut River Blankets using New England-sourced wool. Ms. Fortinsky is also participating in this festival. For more information on her please refer to her gallery page.

Stephanie weaves recycled and new fabric into sturdy rag rugs hand-dyed with indigo. Her alpaca rugs are woven with New England fleece that is spun in Connecticut, and her warp is grown, spun and dyed in America. Her design is primarily influenced by the Scandinavian principle of simplicity, and her rugs conform to the high standards of knotted pile rug weaving. She now teaches rug weaving in her Old Lyme studio, where she works full-time.

Stephanie was trained in indigo dyeing by Berit Hjelholt of Denmark and Sunniva Lonning of the Statens Laererskole i Forming in Norway. She employs traditional tie-dye and shibori techniques to dye her silk and American-grown cotton scarves.
